CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

Giving Opinion of Lisa Rodriguez, Ph.D.’s Article

Talking about teaching cannot be separated talking about classroom management. Classroom management takes important part for the affectivity of learning process. Classroom management refers in manage the student, manage the methodology used in the classroom and also manage the materials are used in the learning process. So many teachers have problem in manage their classroom, and this is common problem.

After reading Lisa Rodriguez, Ph.D.’s article about Classroom Management, I know that issues in the classroom which are stated by Lisa Rodriguez, Ph.D are common in learning process. Like the second issue Leaving Class too frequently, and Lisa Rodriguez, Ph.D.’s solution for this problem is she doesn’t require her students to limit their bathroom breaks or ask permission, however, this is contentious for some faculty when breaks are taken too frequently. You might privately ask the student if everything is OK so that they know that you are concerned by their behavior. Don’t assume disrespect – it might be a bladder infection or some other physical problem. In the other way, in my opinion, we should make limitation of time about our student’s permission. For example we only give them 5 minutes maximum to them to leave learning process.

Another issue is about verbal or physical threats. To overcome this problem, we need to ignore students who state impolite words and make them realize their bad attitude and then they ask for apology to their teacher for what they’ve done. After that as a teacher I think we have to act like usual and involve them in the learning process. For serious verbal or physical threats, we need to make serious treatment for them and try to ask them to share everything they feel.

Refusal to Participate or Speak is also becomes a problem in learning process. To overcome this, in my opinion, ask student who finished do the task first to give her or his answer and let the quite student or who refuse to participate or speak, to listen or give big concern to their friend. The other solution, don’t push the students if they are not be able to answer teacher’s question.

Sometimes students cannot differentiate individual and group work. Some students are lazy to do their homework, so they only copy it from their friend. Sharing/Copying Work is a serious problem. In my opinion, the solution is, give different homework to students. For example ask students to make a story about their past experience. It can be seen if they are copying or not. The other way is ask them to post their homework in our email or website and it will be protected.

The problem that often faced in the classroom is Too Much Chit Chat. Lisa Rodriguez, Ph.D. gives solution of this problem on her article. The solution are Give 2-minute chat times for groups or before class begins let them know that you have material to be covered and that their talking isn’t helping you achieve your goals for the class. Know too that some students occasionally translate a word or phrase to a tablemate who might not have as strong an understanding of English, be patient and observant when curbing this behavior.

In my opinion that is good solution. Let them speak for a few minutes and listen or be quiet when they speak. When our students see us listen for them, they will stop their chit-chat spontaneously. The other way, ask the students who chit chat to do the task and answer our question. Give much task for the students who too much chit chat. Repeat to do this again when they still do that in the next meeting until they change their bad habit.

From the problems above, teachers have to have good ability to solve these problems. Good teachers are not only have a lot of acknowledgement but also have to have good classroom management. Good affectivity in learning process is based on good classroom management. Handle person or students is more difficult than handle things.
